Working overseas!

A hundred years ago, Solomon Islanders by their thousands were forced to sail back to the Solomons from Australia. For many years during the 19th century they had been the backbone, the indispensable labour force which had cleared, planted, cared for and harvested Australia’s sugar cane, its ‘Green Gold’.

Now early in this new millennium hundreds of Solomon Islands workers are once again returning to many of these very same fields but this time to harvest and pick Australian, New Zealand and Taiwanese fruit and other crops.
