IRD (NZ tax number), How do I apply? Should I have a bank account?

IRD (NZ tax number), How do I apply? Should I have a bank account?

In order to legally work in NZ you need an IRD number.

Your employer will ask you for your IRD number (this is compulsory).

Keep in mind that as a Seasonal Worker in New Zealand you can ask for a % of your tax to be refunded once you leave the country.
With every pay, your employer MUST give you a payslip which is the only proof of your earnings and the tax you are paying.
If you employer does not give you a payslip ASK FOR ONE.

You will be required to submit the IRD application form, click here to download the aplication form:

What I would suggest from my experience is:

Once you arrive in NZ find yourself a temporay address (i.e.: The hostel where you are staying) this will be your temporary address (you can update this later)

Process your IRD number (easier if applying online), wait until you receive your IRD number, this could take 3 - 5 working days (most of the time is less)

Applying for your IRD number is FREE.

Along with processing your IRD number pickapicker.co.nz would suggest you also open your bank account.

NZ Banks are very good when it comes to helping overseas visitors.

With your IRD number and your Bank Account you are ready to ROCK AND ROLL !!
