Maggot could have decimated horticulture

MAF border security officials at Dunedin Airport have found a single fruit fly maggot on an undeclared mandarin being carried by an Australian tourist.


Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Peter Silcock says the Queensland fruit fly is the single most threatening pest facing his industry. He says if they were introduced here it would wipe millions of dollars in export earnings and cost thousands of jobs.

He is thanking BioSecurity staff for their vigilance. The Australian tourist caught with the mandarin has been fined 200 dollars.
